What a Mammography Tech Actually Does

A mammography tech uses low-dose ionizing radiation and breast compression to acquire precise images. You explain the exam, review relevant history, position the breast carefully, apply compression, capture the required views, and judge technical image quality before documenting the study. Small positioning adjustments decide whether an image passes or gets repeated. You also perform quality-control tasks assigned by the facility. What makes this specialty distinct is that image quality and patient care happen at the same moment, during an intimate and sometimes uncomfortable exam. You never interpret images, diagnose, or tell patients their results.

The route is post-primary: hold an active R.T.(R), complete mammography structured education, log supervised clinical experience, then pass the ARRT Mammography exam ($225) to earn R.T.(M). The voluntary ARRT credential is separate from federal MQSA qualification. The real bottleneck is hands-on access, since online coursework alone cannot make you clinically qualified. The appeal is focused expertise, mostly predictable schedules, and preventive-care impact. Rad techs earn a median $77,660 (BLS May 2024); mammography techs are counted within that broader occupation, so no separate median exists.
