What Does an OB-GYN Surgical Technologist Do?
As an OB-GYN surgical tech, you work across two related but distinct branches of surgery. On the obstetric side, you assist with cesarean sections—both calm scheduled deliveries and adrenaline-pumping emergencies. On the gynecologic side, you scrub into everything from quick D&Cs to multi-hour robotic hysterectomies. Your day might start with a scheduled C-section, shift to a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, and end with an emergency ectopic pregnancy. This variety keeps the work engaging and builds a versatile skill set.
The team dynamic in OB-GYN is unlike any other surgical specialty. In the labor and delivery OR, you work alongside L&D nurses, OB physicians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatal teams all coordinating around mother and baby. The energy is different from the main OR—there is often tension mixed with excitement, especially during deliveries. You will experience incredible joy when a healthy baby arrives and intense pressure during emergencies. This emotional range makes OB-GYN uniquely rewarding for the right person.
