An overview of the Vocational Nursing Program at Baldy View

The Baldy View Regional Occupational Program (ROP) was established in November 1972 to provide entry-level career preparation within the community. It is operating according to the Joint Powers Agreement of Upland Unified School Districts, Claremont Unified, Chino Valley Unified, and Chaffey Joint Union High School.

Every year, over 500,000 students take part in the Regional Occupational Program courses and become productive citizens of the society through practical and advanced training. Since Baldy View ROP is part of a statewide network of 74 Regional Occupational Centers and Programs, it has reached a broad range of students across the state. Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits Baldy View ROP.

Baldy View ROP offers vocational nursing program to prepare students before taking the national licensure exam and become a full-pledged vocational nurse in California. The program provides the requirements to help students be eligible to legally work as a vocational nurse.

A licensed vocational nurse (LVN) is a job title unique to California and Texas. In other states, people know them as licensed practical nurses. LVNs provide basic bedside care to patients and work under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse. An LVN plays a crucial role in giving the quality services to patients and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team. Here are some of the important functions of LVNs.

  • Obtaining and recording vital signs (pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration, and temperature)
  • Administering medications
  • Collecting samples for medical diagnostics and tests
  • Providing basic nursing care such as inserting catheters, dressing wounds, giving enemas, treating bedsores, monitoring patients, and helping clients take a bath, get dressed, eat, walk, and stand

What will students learn during the program?

The program includes a wide range of medical and nursing concepts. The students will learn concepts related to nutrition, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, fundamentals of nursing, maternal and child care, normal growth and development, and leadership. Professors train students both in a classroom and clinical setting, giving them the opportunity to learn theoretical principles and apply what they learn at the same time.

Moreover, students will also obtain an understanding of medical terminology, math for medications, medical abbreviations, and basic arithmetic skills. While the majority of concepts taught in the program pertains to medical practice, other lessons are also integrated to help students be well-rounded and able to cope with different situations within the workplace. These lessons include safety, technology, communication, ethics, career planning, employment skills, and other Academic and CTE standards.

In addition, the vocational nurse program may include STEM skills relevant for student’s success in administering care and services to patients.

How long will it take to finish the LVN program?

Students are required to complete 1530 hours in total (576 hours in theoretical class and 954 in clinical exposure). The program runs for 62 weeks and may take up to 17 months to complete. One week will be devoted to the preparation of students in taking the NCLEX-PN licensure examination.

It is mandatory to attend all classes to complete the requirements of the LVN programs. Students who are ill and have exceeded three days of absence should have a doctor’s note to be allowed to return. Class always starts on time and tardiness may result in decreased learning experience and late students may later be considered absent.

What is the estimated cost of the program?

The estimated cost of the program is about $22,000 ($19,500 for tuition and fees and $1,500 for books and supplies). Moreover, there is an off-campus room and board cost that amounts to $24,039. This cost is higher than California Community Colleges, but significantly lower than the private LVN programs in California. Other costs include the following:

Is Baldy View an "Online Program"?

No, the program at Baldy View is NOT an online program. Typically, when we think of an "online program", whether it's nursing or some other degree, we think of something that can be completed at home. Although there are some "online LVN programs" in California, clinical rotations must still be completed in person.

Some schools allow certain classes may be completed online, there are still many things the nursing student must be present for. It is during these clinical rotations that students begin to learn how to work with patients. The hands-on work of nursing school isn't something that can be completed virtually.
