The Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate of Achievement at Bakersfield College is a one-year, full-time program that combines classroom instruction, on-campus skills training, and a supervised externship at approved clinical sites. The program follows a set sequence and requires travel to clinical locations during the externship portion.
Students progress through instructor-led coursework on campus to build clinical and administrative competencies used in ambulatory care. The curriculum includes medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, two consecutive clinical medical assistant courses, a skills learning lab, and an externship. The program is not self-paced and uses scheduled class meetings and required labs to ensure consistent progress toward the externship.
Weekly Learning Structure
Each term includes instructor-led classes and required lab activities that align with course outcomes. After completing the classroom and skills components in sequence, students enroll in the externship course to apply skills in a functioning healthcare setting under supervision. Successful completion of all required courses with a grade of “C” or “P” or better is required for the certificate.
- Program length: one academic year with full-time enrollment.
- Instructional modalities: on-campus classes with required skills labs.
- Externship: supervised clinical experience at approved sites; travel to sites is required.
- Sequenced progression: classroom and lab courses precede the externship.
Upon completion of the program’s required courses, students are eligible to sit for recognized medical assistant certification exams, including the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) and the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through NHA. The certificate requires 17 units in total across two terms, culminating in the externship course after the classroom and skills lab sequence.
